Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects individuals of all ages. Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is characterized by the appearance of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes cysts on the skin.

Caused by the overproduction of oil (sebum) in the sebaceous glands, acne primarily affects areas rich in these glands, such as the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back. Hormonal changes during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or stress can trigger excessive sebum production, leading to the development of acne.

Acne occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells, sebum, and bacteria. This blockage creates an ideal environment for the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, a type of bacteria that normally resides on the skin. As the bacteria multiply, inflammation occurs, resulting in redness, swelling, and the formation of various types of acne lesions.

Common types of acne include:

1. Comedones: Non-inflammatory acne lesions that appear as blackheads or whiteheads.

2. Papules: Small, raised, red bumps that are often tender to touch.

3. Pustules: Inflamed lesions filled with pus, appearing as red bumps with a white or yellow center.

4. Nodules: Large, painful, solid bumps beneath the skin’s surface.

5. Cysts: Deep, painful, pus-filled lesions that can leave scars.
